The Legal Metrology Act lays down the requirements for certain documents which have to be submitted by the manufacturer, importer, packer, or dealer of the pre-packed commodity. While obtaining the LMPC CertificateLMPC License/renewal, or LMPC Registration, an applicant needs to fill in the application form and attach the required documents for LMPC License along with the application form.

Any applicant will get the LMPC Certificate only after the proper verification or inspection of his submitted documents. Applicants have two ways to submit their application along with the documents; either they can submit the form through online mode or they can submit the form physically by visiting the Legal Metrology office.

  1. The offices of the legal metrology department are located in different parts of different states of India.
  2. All the states of India have a legal metrology office who works according to the Indian Legal Metrology system from where the manufacturer, importer, packer, or dealer of pre-packed commodities can obtain the certificate.
  3. The inspection of the documents is conducted by the legal metrology officer to ensure that the information provided by the applicant is true and correct in all aspects and that nothing has been concealed therefrom by the applicant.
  4. If in any situation, the legal metrology officer has any kind of doubt, then he will call the applicant for the opportunity of a valid explanation.
  5. Subsequently, a certain period is also provided to the applicant to remove the objection.
  6. Applicants need to pay the prescribed fee along with the prescribed form and documents.

Every manufacturer, dealer, and repairer who deals in weight and measure can fill out the online license renewal application form for auto-renewal of license as a repairer, dealer, and manufacturer of weights and measures through the online portal of legal metrology of their respective state.

The application for auto-renewal shall be made within 30 days before its expiry.

An additional fee will be charged for the auto-renewal of a license, which shall be payable by the applicant if he is permitted by the controller to make an application for auto-renewal within three months from the date of expiry of the license.

After submitting all the above documents, the applicant has to make an online payment of the renewal license fee and the same should be downloaded by the applicant.

Importance of Legal Metrology department for renewal of LMPC License

  1. Legal Metrology has a wider scope than most things, during the time of COVID, the importance of Legal Metrology has increased rapidly as people have become more dependent on the online mode of buying and selling the commodities and they prefer to deal online, not just to save time but also by considering their health.
  2. Legal Metrology takes care of the activities of a manufacturer, repairer, dealer, or importer of weights and measures or prepacked commodities.
  3. Legal Metrology has laid down certain guidelines and procedures for manufacturers, repairers, or dealers of weights and measures. Compliance with the legal metrology act is mandatory for every manufacturer or for every person who deals in weights and measures.
  4. However, noncompliance with the act might lead to a legal metrology dispute under which the offender may be charged under the Indian Penal Code or he will be punishable with a fine or imprisonment as laid down in the legal metrology act.
  5. The Legal Metrology Act prescribed the proper documentation process and the documents that have to be submitted by the manufacturer, dealer, or repairer of bait and measures.
  6. It is the responsibility of the legal metrology officer to inspect the manufacturing unit of a manufacturer to inspect the dealer, importer, packer, or repairer of weights and measures.
